King Mohammed VI of Morocco has tasked Fatima Zahra El Mansouri, coordinator of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), with forming the new government. She thus became the first woman in the country’s history to be entrusted with this task.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol and Chancellery, King Mohammed VI received Fatima Zahra El Mansouri at the Royal Palace in Rabat. During the meeting, she was charged with forming the new government. In accordance with Article 47 of the Moroccan Constitution, the King assigns the task of forming the government to the leader of the political party that secures the most votes in the elections for the House of Representatives.
According to the Ministry, the PAM party took first place in the elections for the 395-seat House of Representatives, securing 97 seats. Since forming a government requires a majority of at least 198 seats in the House of Representatives, negotiations between political parties to establish a governing majority are expected to follow the announcement of the election results. In the elections, the National Rally of Independents (RNI) took second place with 66 seats, the Independence Party third with 65 seats, and the Justice and Development Party fourth with 54 seats.
